Conveyor Sheaves

Conveyor sheaves are grooved wheels for wire rope: take-up sheaves, deflection sheaves on gravity or winch take-ups, and sheaves on maintenance or moving-head winch systems. They are not belt pulleys. A belt pulley is a drum that the conveyor belt wraps. A sheave carries rope. Take-up carriages on long plant and overland belts often use rope, sheaves and a winch or gravity tower to keep belt tension in range. Groove profile, diameter relative to rope, bearing arrangement, guards, and whether the sheave is a fleet angle problem on a dirty tower all affect life. A worn groove will cut rope; a seized sheave will skip and shock the take-up.

Maintenance winches and tripper or moving-head ropes use the same product family with different duty: intermittent versus more frequent movement, outdoor versus gallery, possible fleet through multiple sheaves. Materials handling sheaves are industrial, not elevator parlour gear — still, rope size and groove must match. Do not quote a conveyor drive pulley because someone wrote “pulley” when they meant a rope sheave.

Structure that holds the sheave, and the winch that pulls the rope, are adjacent purchases. A sheave RFQ should still mention rope diameter (measured, not guessed if you can measure), number of sheaves, and photos of the tower or carriage.

Common applications

Sheave jobs are replacements after groove wear, seized bearings, or a take-up upgrade. Typical scopes:

  • Gravity or winch take-up sheavesDeflection and head sheaves on the take-up tower. State rope size, number of falls if you know the reeving, and whether the carriage still runs true.
  • Moving-head or tripper rope sheavesIntermittent duty, often dirtier and more exposed. Describe travel and how many sheaves are in the run.
  • Maintenance winch sheavesUsed for pulling belts, chutes or drives during shutdowns. Duty is occasional but overload risk is real — describe what is being pulled.
  • Guards and bearings onlyIf the wheel is sound and the bearing or guard failed, say so. Complete sheave versus internals is a different quote.

Industries that use this equipment

Mines and overland systems with gravity take-up towers are the heavy users of industrial rope sheaves.

Plant conveyors with winch take-ups on compact sites still need the same distinction from belt pulleys.

Ports and stockyards with moving heads and trippers run outdoor sheaves that corrode and pack with fines.

Specifications buyers should consider

The list below is a briefing checklist, not a datasheet. Exact ratings, dimensions and standards must come from the duty, existing plant records and the supplier quotation — do not treat generic web copy as a specification.

  • Rope diameter (measured) and groove condition photos.
  • Sheave diameter, rim width, bearing type, shaft or dead-shaft arrangement.
  • Duty: take-up, tripper, maintenance winch, other.
  • Number of sheaves and reeving sketch if available.
  • Environment: outdoor tower, gallery, coastal, dusty.
  • Complete sheave versus bearing/guard only.
  • Related winch, structure or take-up carriage work.

Factors that affect selection

  • Groove must match the rope; a “close enough” groove eats rope.
  • A belt pulley lagging quote will not help a take-up tower.
  • Winch drum and motor are Winches; do not hide them in a sheave line if the machine is the failure.
  • Fleet angle and alignment of the tower may be a Structure problem showing up as flange wear.
  • Guarding is part of a safe sheave, not an accessory to skip.

Common problems and failure considerations

  • Rope cut by a worn or wrong groove.
  • Seized sheave bearings that shock the take-up and the belt.
  • RFQ sent to pulley manufacturers who quote lagged drums.
  • Missing guards on a tower.
  • Take-up carriage skew blamed on the winch when a sheave has collapsed.

Maintenance considerations

  • Inspect grooves, flanges and bearings when the take-up is inspected — not only when the rope fails.
  • Keep sheaves turning; a frozen sheave is a rope and gearbox problem next.
  • Check that rope still sits in the groove after any carriage or tower work.
  • Lubricate per the sheave design; contamination from the transfer house is expected — sealing matters.
  • Replace rope and sheave as a system when both are worn; a new rope on a knife groove fails early.

Questions buyers should ask suppliers

  • Are you quoting a wire-rope sheave, not a belt pulley?
  • What groove and diameter do you propose for our measured rope?
  • Complete wheel or bearing change?
  • Are shaft, plummer and guard included?
  • Will you inspect fleet angle and tower alignment, or supply only?

What to include when requesting a quote

Clear briefs produce comparable quotations. Include what you know, and mark estimates separately from measured values. Photos and drawings help more than extra adjectives.

  • Photos of sheave, rope and tower or carriage.
  • Measured rope diameter.
  • Duty: take-up / tripper / maintenance.
  • Count of sheaves.
  • Winches or Structure also ticked if those assemblies are involved.
  • Supply versus install.

Frequently asked questions

Sheave versus pulley — which do I need?

If wire rope runs in a groove, you need a sheave. If the conveyor belt wraps a drum, you need a pulley. Shop language often calls both “pulleys”. Put a photo in the RFQ. Tick Pulleys for belt drums and lagging; tick Sheaves for rope wheels.

Should the winch be on the same quote?

If the hoisting machine, brake or controls failed, tick Winches. If only the wheel in the tower is worn, Sheaves is enough. Tick both when the take-up system is the job and you want the interface quoted together.

Do I need to specify a D/d ratio?

Give measured rope size and existing sheave diameter if you can. Do not invent a ratio. If the existing groove has been cutting rope, say so — suppliers may propose a larger sheave or a groove recut rather than a clone of a worn wheel.

Are V-belt pulleys included?

V-belt pulleys (also called sheaves in some catalogues) on a motor-to-gearbox belt drive are power-transmission hardware. If that is your job, tick Power Transmission and describe V-belt grooves, and use Sheaves here when you mean wire-rope wheels on take-up or winch systems. The photo removes the ambiguity.
