Conveyor Backstops
A conveyor backstop — also called a holdback — is a one-way device that prevents the loaded belt from running backwards when the drive is off or has failed. On inclined conveyors in mines, quarries and process plants, gravity will otherwise reverse the belt, dump cargo at the tail, and damage the drive train. Backstops are not brakes. A brake dissipates energy to stop or hold a shaft; a backstop allows rotation in the running direction and locks against reverse rotation.

Typical arrangements use a sprag, ramp-roller or similar freewheel clutch mounted on the gearbox high-speed or low-speed shaft, or on a pulley shaft, with the stationary side tied into the drive frame. When the motor drives forward, the backstop overruns. When torque tries to reverse, it wedges and holds. Some plants still refer to “holdbacks” as a gearbox option rather than a separate purchase — say whether you need a unit to bolt on, a gearbox with integral holdback, or an inspection of an existing device.
Selection follows incline, belt tension at stop, whether the conveyor can reverse under control, and the shaft you can actually access. A backstop sized only from motor kW without considering the inclined load is incomplete. Dual-drive conveyors need a clear statement of which shafts are held and how load is shared. Declines that must be stopped and held are a braking problem first; an incline that must not roll back is a backstop problem.
Maintenance access on elevated drive towers, dust, and whether the device is external and inspectable or buried in a gearbox all affect what you should ask for. Do not specify a disc brake when you mean a holdback, or you will receive stopping equipment that is not arranged as a one-way clutch.
Common applications
Backstops appear wherever a loaded belt would run downhill if the drive lost torque. Typical South African applications include:
- Inclined plant and overland belts — Primary protection against rollback after a trip, power loss or gearbox failure. State lift and whether the belt is troughed bulk or a steep feeder.
- Gearbox-mounted holdbacks — Factory or retrofit devices on shaft-mounted or foot-mounted reducers common on mine stringer drives. Footprint and shaft end availability decide drop-in fit.
- Pulley-shaft holdbacks — Used when the gearbox arrangement cannot take a backstop or a second holding point is required. Bearing centres and shaft stiffness matter.
- Reversible or dual-drive exceptions — If the conveyor must run in reverse for maintenance or process reasons, a standard backstop may be wrong. Describe the operating modes so suppliers do not quote a device that forbids reverse.
Industries that use this equipment
Open-pit and underground mines use holdbacks on inclined ROM, product and take-away conveyors where rollback would bury the tail and stall crushing.
Quarries, cement works and coal handling plants run short, steep belts between crushers, screens and bins — classic holdback duty.
Ports and stockyards with elevated galleries still need rollback protection on the inclined portions, even when the rest of the route is flat.
Warehouses and package lines rarely need mine-style backstops; confirm you mean a bulk inclined belt before requesting industrial holdbacks.
Specifications buyers should consider
The list below is a briefing checklist, not a datasheet. Exact ratings, dimensions and standards must come from the duty, existing plant records and the supplier quotation — do not treat generic web copy as a specification.
- Incline duty: uphill carrying, and whether any controlled reverse is required.
- Where the device must mount: gearbox HS/LS shaft, pulley shaft, or “advise”.
- Existing gearbox make, size, shaft ends and whether an integral holdback already exists.
- Drive arrangement: single or dual drive, fluid coupling or VSD, presence of a brake.
- Nameplate data and photos of the drive frame and available shaft.
- Environment: dust, outdoor, underground certification if applicable.
- Whether the quote is supply only, fitment during a shutdown, or inspection of a noisy or slipping existing unit.
Factors that affect selection
- Function first: prevent reverse rotation, do not confuse with emergency stopping.
- If the conveyor is a decline that must be brought to rest, look at Brakes; a backstop will not dissipate running energy.
- Integral gearbox holdbacks versus external units change spares and inspection.
- Reversing conveyors need a different operating concept — sometimes a brake, a disconnect, or a backstop that can be taken out of service under permit.
- Access for inspection and lubrication on a drive tower is part of a practical choice.
- Match the brief to Conveyor Drives or Gearboxes if the whole power train is being replaced.
Common problems and failure considerations
- Rollback after a trip because no holdback was fitted, or the existing unit overran when it should have locked.
- A backstop destroyed by attempting to reverse the belt with the device still engaged.
- Noise, heat or wear from misalignment, contamination or a unit too small for the inclined load.
- Quotes for disc brakes when the buyer wrote “holdback” in plant slang without explaining incline rollback.
- Dual drives with a holdback on only one path, leaving a rollback route through the second gearbox.
Maintenance considerations
- Include the backstop on drive inspections: unusual noise, heat, oil leaks at the device, loose torque arm or reaction bracket.
- Do not reverse the conveyor for cleaning or lining-up unless the holdback is designed or isolated for that mode.
- Keep reaction brackets tight; a loose tie allows movement that damages the clutch.
- After gearbox overhaul, confirm the holdback is refitted in the correct direction of rotation.
- Treat contamination like any other clutch: dust shields and correct lubricant if the design requires it.
Questions buyers should ask suppliers
- Is this a sprag, ramp or other freewheel type, and on which shaft do you propose to mount it?
- Have you assumed no reverse running, or can the unit be configured for a permitted reverse?
- What reaction arrangement do you need on our drive frame?
- Is inspection and lubrication possible without removing the gearbox?
- How should this device coexist with any service or emergency brake already on the drive?
- Is installation, alignment and direction-of-rotation check included?
What to include when requesting a quote
Clear briefs produce comparable quotations. Include what you know, and mark estimates separately from measured values. Photos and drawings help more than extra adjectives.
- State “backstop / holdback — prevent rollback”, not only “brake”.
- Incline description, single or dual drive, photos of gearbox and shaft ends.
- Whether reverse running is ever required.
- Existing holdback details if replacing.
- Gearbox and motor nameplates.
- Site, access to the drive tower, shutdown window.

Frequently asked questions
Is a backstop the same as a conveyor brake?
No. A backstop is a one-way clutch that prevents reverse rotation on an incline. A brake absorbs energy to stop or hold a shaft. Decline conveyors and emergency-stop duties are braking problems. Inclined belts that must not roll back are holdback problems. Tick Brakes or Backstops according to that function, or both if the machine needs stopping and anti-rollback.
Where is a holdback usually fitted?
On a gearbox shaft or a pulley shaft, with a reaction to the drive frame. Share nameplates and photos so suppliers can see which shaft is free and whether an integral gearbox holdback already exists. Do not assume a pulley-mounted unit will fit a stringer drive without checking bearings and space.
What if we sometimes reverse the belt?
Say so clearly. A standard backstop will fight reverse torque and can be destroyed, or it will prevent the reverse move. Suppliers may propose a different holding method, a releasable device, or a procedure to isolate the holdback under permit. Silent briefs produce the wrong freewheel.
Should I tick Gearboxes or Backstops?
Tick Backstops when the holdback is the item being bought or inspected. Tick Gearboxes when the reducer is being replaced and may include an integral holdback. Tick both if you want a gearbox specialist and a holdback specialist to see the same incline problem.
