Conveyor Winches
Conveyor winches are the machines that pull wire rope: take-up winches that tension the belt, winches that move a head or tripper, and maintenance winches used to pull belts or equipment during shutdowns. They include the drum, drive, brake and usually a control station. They are not sheaves (the grooved wheels the rope runs on) and not the main conveyor drive that turns the belt pulley. A take-up winch adjusts belt tension by moving a carriage or raising a gravity counterweight arrangement, depending on the design. It must hold when stopped — braking and, where used, self-locking or back-driving behaviour matter. Controls may be local pushbuttons, pendant, or PLC. Limit switches that stop travel before the carriage hits the stops are part of a complete system, even if they sit in Controls or Instrumentation commercially.
Tripper and moving-head winches are travel machines with a different duty cycle: more starts, outdoor exposure, and coordination with belt permits so you do not travel under load incorrectly. Maintenance winches may be portable or fixed and are often overloaded in the last hours of a shutdown. Describe what is being pulled and whether the winch is permanent plant or a shutdown hire.
South African galleries and take-up towers add dust, UV and access constraints. Underground winches may need certified electrics. Do not specify a conveyor drive gearbox as a winch, or a sheave as the whole take-up.
Common applications
Winch RFQs are replacements, brake overhauls, or new take-up machines. Typical duties:
- Belt take-up winches — Tension the carrying belt. Describe carriage or gravity tower, rope size, and whether the winch no longer holds or no longer pulls.
- Tripper and moving-head winches — Travel along the conveyor. Include travel length, outdoor duty, and how travel is permitted relative to the belt running.
- Maintenance and belt-pulling winches — Shutdown tools. Say portable versus fixed, and what load you intend to pull in words (belt roll, chute section, drive) without inventing a tonne rating if you do not have one — describe the object and ask for a proposal.
- Brake, drum or control-only repairs — If the gearbox is sound and the brake or drum lagging failed, say so. Complete winch versus components changes the respondent.
Industries that use this equipment
Mines and overland belts with winch take-ups or gravity towers that still use a winch for positioning are the core market.
Stockyards, ports and coal plants run tripper and moving-head winches in the weather.
Process plants use smaller take-up winches on compact conveyors where gravity towers will not fit.
Shutdown contractors use maintenance winches across all of the above — still describe the site rules and what is pulled.
Specifications buyers should consider
The list below is a briefing checklist, not a datasheet. Exact ratings, dimensions and standards must come from the duty, existing plant records and the supplier quotation — do not treat generic web copy as a specification.
- Duty: take-up, tripper/moving head, maintenance, other.
- Photos of drum, rope, brake, motor nameplate, and the carriage or tower.
- Rope diameter, drum condition, and whether sheaves are in or out of scope.
- Hold versus pull problem — brake, motor, gearbox, or rope.
- Control: local, pendant, PLC, limits fitted or missing.
- Environment and underground certification if required.
- Complete machine versus brake/drum/motor only; hire versus purchase if relevant.
Factors that affect selection
- Sheaves and rope wear may be the real failure with a healthy winch — inspect the system.
- Main belt drive motors are not winches.
- Holding on a take-up is a brake (and sometimes gearbox) problem as much as a motor problem.
- Limit switches and permits belong with Controls if the logic is wrong.
- Do not invent line pull; describe geometry and the object moved if you lack a drawing.
Common problems and failure considerations
- Take-up that creeps because the brake does not hold.
- Rope damaged by a seized sheave while the winch is blamed.
- Tripper that can travel without belt or personnel permissives.
- Maintenance winch used beyond a sensible duty because nothing else is available in the shutdown.
- Quotes for conveyor gearboxes that will not drum rope.
Maintenance considerations
- Inspect rope, drum grooves, brake linings and limits on the same interval as the take-up.
- Keep sheaves turning so the winch is not shock-loaded.
- Test that the winch holds after stopping, under a safe procedure.
- After any control change, prove limits before production travel.
- Do not leave take-up tension at an extreme because the winch is awkward to operate — that damages the belt.
Questions buyers should ask suppliers
- Complete winch or named components (brake, drum, motor, gearbox)?
- Take-up, tripper or maintenance duty?
- Are sheaves, rope and limits in your battery limits?
- What control and fail-safe hold do you include?
- Install, rope reeving and commission, or ex-works machine only?
- If we cannot supply line pull, what site data do you need instead?
What to include when requesting a quote
Clear briefs produce comparable quotations. Include what you know, and mark estimates separately from measured values. Photos and drawings help more than extra adjectives.
- Duty and photos of the whole rope path, not only the motor.
- What failed: hold, pull, noise, controls.
- Rope size, sheave condition, carriage/tower.
- Controls and limits as found.
- Sheaves / Structure / Controls also ticked if those are part of the system.
- Site access to the tower or tripper rail.
- Shutdown window for change-out and load test.

Frequently asked questions
Winch versus sheave versus conveyor drive?
The winch is the powered drum that pulls rope. Sheaves are the grooved wheels that guide the rope. The conveyor drive turns the belt pulley. Tension problems can come from any of the three plus the belt itself. Photograph the take-up tower and say whether the machine will not pull, will not hold, or the rope is cutting on a wheel.
Do I need a line-pull figure?
Only if you have it from a drawing or a previous data sheet. If you do not, describe take-up type, carriage, approximate geometry, and the symptom. Do not invent a tonne rating. Suppliers would rather size from site data than from a guessed number.
Is a take-up winch the same as a brake on the main belt?
No. A take-up winch brake holds the tension drum. A conveyor brake on the main drive stops the belt. Both may exist on one conveyor. Use Brakes for belt stopping/holding on the drive; use Winches for the tension or travel machine.
Can we hire a maintenance winch through this category?
You can ask. Say hire versus purchase, what you are pulling, site rules, and duration of the shutdown. Some respondents supply machines; others only sell permanent plant. Clear notes prevent a capital quote when you needed a shutdown hire, or the reverse.
