Conveyor Pulleys and Lagging
Drive, tail and bend pulley roles, lagging options, maintenance signals and RFQ tips for South African plants.
Pulleys transmit drive torque, turn the belt at the ends of the conveyor and change belt direction at bends and take-ups. Lagging protects the shell and improves traction. Drive, tail and bend roles
Drive (head) pulleys pull the belt. Tail pulleys turn the belt at the opposite end and often work with the take-up. Bend and snub pulleys increase wrap angle or route the belt through vertical curves. Dead-shaft and live-shaft designs appear across mines and process plants; confirm which you have before ordering.
Diameter affects belt flexing fatigue and required motor torque. Face width must suit belt width plus tracking allowance. Crowning is sometimes used on lighter duties; heavy mining belts more often rely on training idlers and square structure than aggressive crowns.
Lagging options
Plain rubber, ceramic-embedded rubber and diamond-pattern lagging are common. Ceramic helps wet or high-torque drives where slip is a risk. Replace lagging when worn smooth, chunked or when bond failure lifts edges. Hot vulcanised lagging and cold-bond kits both appear in South African workshops — state which method your site prefers and whether work is on-site or workshop-based.
Maintenance signals
- Visible lagging wear to the shell or exposed ceramic edges
- Bearing noise, grease purge failure or hot hubs
- Belt slip under load despite correct tension
- Shell corrosion at lagging edges or weld seams
Chronic slip is not always a lagging problem — check cleaner setup, material spillage onto the drive and whether the take-up can maintain tension. Photograph the pulley and share shaft diameters, bearing housings and locking arrangements in your RFQ.
Getting comparable quotes
