Conveyor systems sit under almost every bulk and packaged-goods flow in South Africa: pits and plants, mills and silos, factories, warehouses and harbour stockyards. The equipment families — belt, roller, screw, chain and the rest — are covered in types of conveyor systems. Why industry context belongs in the RFQ
A belt that survives a dry inland aggregate transfer may fail in a wet coal plant or a sugar mill. A stainless washdown packing conveyor is the wrong conversation for a platinum concentrator. Industry tells the supplier about material, environment, compliance and who will maintain the line after handover.
Name the industry and the process step, not only the town. "Chrome concentrator transfer to the filter" and "packaged maize meal to palletiser" lead to different idlers, covers, cleaners and controls. Cost drivers that cut across industries are in the conveyor system cost guide.
Mining
Mining remains the setting where conveyors carry the highest tensions, the most abrasive ores and the least forgiving shutdown windows. Surface plants use troughed belts between crushers, screens, bins and stockpiles. Decline and underground belts add fire-resistant grades, restricted access and isolation rules that change both product and installation method.
Common mining briefing points: lump size and drop height at loading, water and clay, tramp metal, continuous versus campaign operation, and whether the conveyor is the only path out of a section. Turnkey overland or plant-expansion work should be labelled as such so OEMs rather than parts stockists lead the response. Use turnkey conveyor projects when you need design, not only a roll of belting.
Coalfields
Coal handling on the Highveld and in KwaZulu-Natal deals with dust, moisture variation, and belts that run hard through the week. Stockyard trippers, reclaim and plant feed conveyors see carry-back and spillage if cleaners and skirts are neglected. Underground coal adds the fire-resistant belting and access constraints already noted.
Tell suppliers whether the coal is ROM, washed, or a sticky fines stream, and whether the conveyor is open to weather. Wet fines change chute angles and scraper duty more than they change a drawing of belt width. Include belt cleaners and skirt rubber when carry-back is already a reliability issue.
Iron ore
Iron ore operations, including the long inland-to-coast logistics chain and plant conveyors in the Northern Cape and at export terminals, emphasise abrasion, high mass flow and often long centres. Overland belts, stackers and ship-loader feed systems are capital projects; in-plant transfers still live or die on chute liners, pulley lagging and idler quality.
Remote-site logistics — long road hauls, limited cranage, tight shutdown slots — belong in the notes. A specification that ignores freight and crew travel will not survive contact with the site. Location on the quote form is part of that story.
Platinum and chrome
Bushveld platinum and chrome operations combine abrasive rock with process plants that also handle wet slurry-related transfers, crushed product and concentrate. Conveyors appear from primary crushing through milling feed, and again on product and discard streams. Impact, wear and corrosion can appear on the same site in different duties.
Concentrator houses are often congested. Replacement jobs need accurate photos of access, not only belt width. Underground development and decline belts, where they exist, should be flagged for fire-resistant grades and cage constraints. Do not brief a surface plant spec for an underground conveyor.
Quarrying and aggregate
Quarries and crushing plants across the country run short, heavily loaded belts from jaw and cone crushers to screens and stockpiles. Impact at the load point, sharp rock and frequent relocating of mobile or modular plants are typical. Structure may be lighter than a mine gallery, but idlers and belts still fail early if chutes are worn.
Mobile and modular plants need different briefing from a fixed pit-to-plant conveyor: transport width, repeated assembly, and whether the buyer wants components or a complete frame. Aggregate producers often buy like-for-like replacements under shutdown pressure — stamp photos and frame dimensions save a week of measuring.
Manufacturing plants
Manufacturing uses conveyors for both bulk intermediates and unit loads. Steel, chemical, pulp, automotive and general factories may have a mix of troughed process belts, package belts and roller lines in the same yard. The industrial environment — oil, heat, washdown, or foundry dust — should be named so cover compounds and motor enclosures are not guessed.
Integration with presses, ovens, bagging machines or robots makes controls and guarding part of the conveyor, not an afterthought. Tick controls and instrumentation when the line must interlock with existing plant, not only run locally.
Agriculture — sugar and grain
Sugar milling in KwaZulu-Natal and the Lowveld moves cane, bagasse and sugar in conditions that are humid, fibrous and seasonal. Cane and bagasse handling is not the same as a clean packaged-sugar belt. Seasonal peaks mean shutdowns are planned around crush, and delayed spares miss the window.
Grain silos and mills — maize, wheat and oilseeds in producing regions and at inland and coastal silos — use belts, chain and elevators for intake, transfer and load-out. Dust, explosion-related site rules where they apply, and the need to keep product clean all affect enclosure, covers and housekeeping. Say whether the product is raw intake, processed meal, or bagged goods.
Fertiliser and other agri-inputs add corrosion and caking. If the material absorbs moisture or attacks ordinary rubber, say so in the notes rather than expecting a generic quarry belt to last.
Food processing
Food plants need hygiene, washdown, and materials that suit the product and cleaning chemicals. Stainless frames, modular belts and easy-clean transfers are a different supply chain from mining rubber. Allergen, halal or export customer rules may constrain what can sit above an open product stream.
Brief suppliers on wash temperature, chemicals, and whether the conveyor contacts food or only packed cartons. A carton line in a food warehouse is closer to general warehousing than to a raw-protein belt. Mixing those duties in one vague "food conveyor" request produces unusable quotes.
Warehousing
Warehouses and distribution centres use roller, belt and sometimes sortation conveyors for cartons, totes and pallets. Duty is usually cleaner than bulk mining, but integration with scanners, weighers, palletisers and warehouse software can dominate engineering cost. Standard modules are cheaper when they match existing pitch and elevation; custom mezzanine transfers are not a catalogue item.
Fire, pedestrian aisles and forklift traffic shape guarding and layout. If you are extending an existing brand of roller conveyor, name the module or pitch. If you need a complete packing hall, consider turnkey rather than buying unmatched lengths of roller.
Logistics and ports
Ports and inland terminals move bulk commodities and containers through stockyards, loaders and warehouses. Richards Bay, Durban, Saldanha, Ngqura and Cape Town each combine coastal corrosion with high utilisation and third-party access rules. Conveyors here may be long, elevated, and tied to stackers, reclaimers or ship loaders.
Salt air, wind-blown product and 24-hour operations affect coatings, enclosures and maintenance access. Contractor control at a terminal is often stricter than at a private factory — inductions, permits and laydown space should be in the brief. Overland or terminal work is usually a project, not a belt-only RFQ.
Cement and other bulk material handling
Cement plants, lime, fly ash, coal for kilns, and similar dusty abrasive duties sit between mining transfers and process-plant conveyors. Heat near kilns, fine dust that attacks seals, and enclosed transfers for environmental control all change idler, cover and cleaner choices. Clinker and raw mill circuits are not packaging belts.
Other bulk handling — fertiliser stores, mineral sands, scrap, biomass — should be described by material behaviour (hot, oily, dusty, lumpy) rather than by a generic industry label. The supplier needs to know what sits on the belt at the load point.
Structure, galleries and dust control often rival the mechanical belt in project cost. Include conveyor structure when steelwork is in scope.
What to tell suppliers about your industry
- Industry and process step (not only "mining" or "food")
- Material name, moisture, temperature, lump size, abrasiveness
- Indoor, outdoor, underground, or coastal exposure
- Hygiene, fire-resistant or other site product rules
- Whether the line is the plant bottleneck
- Who maintains it after installation

FAQ
Is a mining belt automatically right for a quarry?
Not automatically. Quarries can be as abrasive as some mine transfers, but widths, lengths, mobile plant constraints and impact at the crusher differ. Describe the duty, not only the industry label.
Can one supplier cover mining and packaging?
Some network members span both; many specialise. Selecting the right categories — belting versus a unit-handling turnkey, for example — is how matching routes the brief. Do not assume one quotation will cover a ROM belt and a carton line.
Where should I start if I do not know the conveyor type?
Read types of conveyor systems, then describe material and layout in your notes even if you cannot name the family. Photos of the existing line are often enough for suppliers to recognise the duty.
Do coastal plants need different equipment?
They often need different corrosion protection, enclosures and sometimes fasteners or coatings. The mechanical layout may look similar to an inland plant; the finish and sealing should not be assumed identical.
