Choosing a Conveyor Supplier in South Africa

South Africa has a deep conveyor supply base — belting houses, component makers, vulcanising crews and turnkey OEMs. Choosing well is less about finding a single "best" company and more about matching scope, duty and commercial terms. This checklist helps buyers prepare RFQs that produce comparable quotations.

Define the scope first

Separate supply-only, supply-and-install, and full design-build. A belt replacement with on-site splice is a different job from a new transfer conveyor with chutes, structure and electrics. Mixing scopes in one vague email creates quotes that cannot be ranked. List inclusions and exclusions: cranage, scaffolding, hot-work permits, disposal of old belt, commissioning and training.

RFQ information pack

• Site location and access constraints (underground, height, shutdown window)
• Material handled, tonnage, belt width/speed if known
• Photos, sketches or P&IDs of the area
• Existing brand/model data for like-for-like components
• Required standards (e.g. underground fire-resistant belting)
• Commercial terms: delivery Incoterms, payment, validity, warranties

The more complete the pack, the fewer clarifications delay pricing. If you do not know every parameter, say what is estimated versus measured.

How to compare quotations

Compare technical compliance before price. Cover grade, carcass rating, gearbox service factor and instrumentation list must match the brief. Ask for lead times and what happens if a critical spare fails mid-project. Check whether installation labour assumes site facilities you do not have.

Lowest price is not always lowest cost if splice quality, lagging bond or chute liners fail early. Ask for references on similar duty — mining transfer versus warehouse packaging are different worlds.
